About metaphysics

ACU metaphysics students sitting on the grass on campus studying

One of the most original disciplines of the Western intellectual tradition, metaphysics is concerned with the fundamental nature of reality: existence, essence and identity, time, space, freedom and causation, and the ultimate. It’s an area of study that is both fascinating in its own right, and also of great relevance for the progress of other fields such as the natural sciences, theology and psychology.

Where can metaphysics take you?

Metaphysics is a good choice for furthering pure research in other fields, such as science, psychology or theology. It’s also useful for future secondary school philosophy teachers (especially in Victoria). Study metaphysics as part of a double-degree – within either the Bachelor of Philosophy or Bachelor of Arts – and you’ll add a range of soft skills, philosophical perspectives, and experience. You can also advance your love of metaphysics with postgraduate study.
